Many years ago, an energetic young man named Chucky Jenkins had a life-changing dream that comedy would lead people to salvation. It all started when he met a man named James Stephens III on his lunch break while getting his car washed. At this time, Jenkins was an officer in the army and was stationed in his hometown of Seattle, Washington.
One
night, Chucky was hanging out at the comedy club where James was doing his set. James always thought that Chucky was funny when he
joked about everyday life situations and decided to pull Chucky on stage for an impromptu set. Extremely nervous and at a loss for words, Chucky was reluctant to speak into the microphone. James asked him to simply talk about himself and the things they would discuss while hanging out. Well, he did just that and had the audience in tears. A star was in the making.
While Chucky Jenkins was attending Miles College in Birmingham, Alabama, he met fellow comedian, Sinbad. That night Sinbad was scheduled to do a show at The Comedy Club-Stardome, and he invited him to come along. Sinbad pulled him on stage and once again, Chucky brought the house down. He was instantly hired as the emcee of the club and two months later he was performing in clubs across the country and overseas. He eventually landed a guest appearance on the NBC hit sitcom, "A Different World," and even opened for Sinbad on his Brain Damage Tour date in Birmingham. The most important thing Chucky learned from both James Stephens III and Sinbad is that you don't have to curse and talk about inappropriate subject matter to be funny.
Now, Chucky Jenkins was a Christian and his material consisted only of clean jokes. However, his comedy had no references to the victorious lifestyle he was leading offstage. One night in 1991, God moved on this eager servant and Chucky began to preach instead of doing his normal set. Soon afterwards, he landed the opening spot at a Winans concert. This milestone sent Chucky running vigorously toward his dream and hasn't looked back since. "People are looking for more than a laugh or a temporary relief, but a life-changing laughter," he says.
Chucky Jenkins removed himself from the mainstream comedy scene and began to perform with major Gospel artists like Fred Hammond, Dr. Bobby Jones, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, CeCe Winans, Dottie Peoples, Shirley Caesar, Bishop T.D. Jakes, The Gospel Gangsters, Pastor Creflo Dollar, Jr., God's Property, Hezekiah Walker, Helen Baylor, T-Bone, Debbie & Angie Winans, Bishop Eddie Long, Dr. Bobby Jones, MC Hammer, Ben Tankard, Newsboys, Nu Wine, A-1 Swift, Marvin Sapp, Dr. Myles Munroe, and many more!
God has since taken him back to where he started to do ministry, while sharing the stage with top comedians on shows like BET's "Comic View" and Jamie Foxx's "Laffapalooza." While touring overseas in Germany and Holland, Chucky Jenkins landed on the stand-up comedy show, "The Laugh Factory." Originally, he was not scheduled to headline the show, but on opening night his act blew away the competition – and he did it without using profanity or inappropriate subject matter.
"God brought me out of the darkness to shape and mold me to prepare me to go right back into the darkness, so I could reach not only audiences, but other comedians and share the message of salvation," says Chucky. "My goal is to take Christian comedy to the mainstream, to do comedy that the whole family can enjoy and in the end, introduce people to Christ."
Chucky Jenkins has uniquely mastered the art of comedy, tied in with the art of ministry. With his sidesplitting wit and hilarious sketches, based on life experiences, church family matters and bible stories, he ministers to his audience, while making them laugh all the way to the alter. He keeps his audiences in stitches with crazy song parodies and with his outrageously funny
portrayals, such as that of Moses as Forest Gump.
His talents landed him a guest appearance as the 1999 Host of the Stellar Awards. His God-given calling for comedy has people asking him 'Why comedy?' His response is "In Proverbs 17:22, the answer is clear: Laughter is like medicine and it heals broken spirits. I use my gift to give God the glory and introduce people to him."
Chucky Jenkins is the doctor with the prescription that ministers to your soul as you laugh your sadness away. All things are possible in the name of the Lord!
