For her modest beginnings as a singer in English dance
halls, Cleo Laine has gone on to achieve international acclaim by
continually expanding her talents in a career which spans some four decades. One of her
biggest breaks was as a featured singer in the John Dankworth London Big Band. The ensuing
years found increasing fame in touring and recording music of the world's most popular
writers and composers.
She starred in London's West End theatre before finding
success on the American Broadway stage. Hailed as the "Queen of Jazz,"
she is one of the most celebrated singers of our time. Cleo commands a dazzling array of
vocal styles and is the only singer every to receive Grammy nominations in the Female
Jazz, Popular, and Classical categories.
Through the years Cleo has been the recipient of numerous other
awards and honors. In a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, the Queen of England bestowed upon
her one of Great Britain's highest honors, heretofore, she will be officially known as Dame
Cleo. The awarding of this title by her Royal Highness The Queen Elizabeth is the
female equivalent of knighthood such as that received by Paul McCartney, now Sir Paul.
Whether interpreting a collection of Shakespeare's sonnets set to music,
appearing in Jazz festivals, operas, singing with Symphony orchestras or singing with
her husband John's big band, Cleo Laine is consistently finding new
forums for her considerable range of talents.
