"The Harmonica Wizard"
"Little Walter Lifetime Achievement Award Winner"
No,
he never hung out with the Rat Pack on the martini-stained Vegas strip,
and it's highly doubtful that he honors requests for "The Candy
Man." This Little Sammy Davis is a veteran harp blower with
a discography dating back to 1952. Where's he been all these years?
Poughkeepsie, New York, of course!
Davis learned his way around a harmonica at age eight. He eventually exited Mississippi for Florida, where he worked in the orange groves and met immaculate guitarist Earl Hooker. Davis cut four sides in 1952 for Henry Stone's Rockin' label in Miami as Little Sam Davis (with Hooker providing classy accompaniment) that comprised the bulk of his discography until recently. He visited Chicago in 1953, hanging out with harp genius Little Walter, Jimmy Reed, and Muddy Waters. But Davis rambled on, eventually settling in Poughkeepsie.
Other than a 45 for Pete Lowry's Trix logo, things
were pretty quiet for our hero until a few years back, when he joined
forces with guitarist Fred Scribner and got back into playing. Now, he's
a favorite guest of popular New York morning radio personality Don Imus,
he has his own band and an album on the shelves, and with any luck at
all, nobody will mistake him for another diminutively proportioned
entertainer by the same name.
~ Bill Dahl, All Music Guide
Little Sammy Davis, vocalist and harmonica player has been called a blues icon. He has been a musician since the age of eight and is a living history of the blues with the musical chops to back it up. Born in the Mississippi Delta, he recorded with Earl Hooker and Slim Harpo and has been in bands with Albert King, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, Jimmy Reed and many others at the height of the Chicago blues scene.
What others say --
Chicago
Tribune:
"Davis' singing and
harp playing can send chills down your spine and he is supported by
a lot of subtle kicks in the pants from this ace rhythm section,
which consists of first class musicians."
Rhythm & News:
"It's not a
exaggeration to say that he was the highlight of the show for most
of the crowd, and I think a lot of people felt the excitement of
discovering something really special that not everyone knows about
yet. His playing was enough like Little Walter's to impress even the
staunchest harp fan with his feel for Walter's tone and nuance, but
different enough to let you know that Sam is his own man."
Blues Magazine:
"Davis as singer and
harp player has the charm of Williamson. He plays with authority and
variety, no doubt learned over years of sitting in with others, yet
Davis has a to-date sound."
