Don Mincey

Don Mincey recalls his first "Chase away."  It was in the spring of 1976 at a gift shop in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. "Saturday Night Live" was into its first season that year, and young comedian Chevy Chase was on his way to becoming a national TV star.  Mincey noticed a group of teenagers giggling and pointing at him. Suddenly they rushed toward him. He says he bolted out the door and ran down the street.

Although Mincey is 10 years younger than Chevy Chase, he says hardly a day goes by without double takes and whispers when he is out in public.  "I get a lot of stares whenever I go out," he says. "Sometimes, in restaurants, the manager will come up to me and say, 'I know who you are' and thank me for eating there and refuse to take my money."

The New York Friars' Club Roast of Chevy Chase in 1991 proved to be Don Mincey's toughest and most important gig to date. He did not get to talk long with the actor, but Mincey was able to shake his hand and get a pretty good look at the man for whom people often mistake him.

"We fooled a lot of people," Mincey said. "Comedian Robert Klein started toward me and stuck out his hand, and then apparently realized that I was not Chevy. He said, 'You're Chevy's brother, aren't you?'  I said, 'Yes, I'm Chrysler Chase.'"

Not only does Don Mincey look like Chevy Chase, he has also perfected Chase's famous personas such as Clark W. Griswald from the famous Lampoon series, Fletcher from "Fletch" and "Fletch Lives," and a few of his character skits from the "Saturday Night Live."
